Barn Conversion

By | Barn Conversion, Domestic, Latest News | No Comments

AC|A have been busy designing the unique conversion of a Shropshire barn into a modern, 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom dwelling.

Situated in a relatively flat existing grazing field, this existing timber frame, timber cladded, single storey barn gained permitted development for the conversion into a remarkable private dwelling.

AC|A provided a design concept that is truly unique and provided our client with a home to be proud of.

A glazed roof ‘ribbon’ takes you through the main entrance hall of this deep floor plan, enabling natural light to penetrate deep into the centre of the house, but also subtly guides you to the kitchen, the metaphorical heart of the house.

Western red cedar cladding, ivory white render and dark grey aluminium aspect windows and sliding doors give a material palette a modern twist sitting under a traditional looking standing seam zinc roofline, whilst the external landscape the building sits in is rural, purposefully low key and meadow like.

Great News about Permitted Development Rights and Affordable Housing Contributions

By | Domestic | No Comments

For those that do not already know, permitted development rights changed  as of April 2014. You can convert redundant agricultural buildings to residential dwellings without the need to apply for planning permission. The changes only apply in England and came into effect on the 6th April 2014. It allows the conversion of the agricultural rural buildings into either 3 dwellings or a maximum of 450sqm of residential space. Listed buildings and buildings within areas of either conservation or natural beauty are exempt from the change.

AC | Architecture Ltd can happily confirm that following detailed conversations with Shropshire Councils planning policy department, NO affordable housing contribution will be required if indeed the conversion falls under permitted development. This could save potential developers, farm owners and agricultural land owners approximately £12,000 in affordable housing contributions to the council per unit.
